| Article | You would normally expect to see carpet on the floor, but not so in an office building in The Netherlands. A bold design in a government office in Apeldoorn, about 60 miles south-east of Amsterdam, has seen Axminster carpeting from DESSO, the international carpet manufacturer, climb off the floor and onto the wall. Interior designs for the building were by Rob Birza, an important artist in contemporary Dutch fine arts, and who has exhibited in galleries and museums including the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Haags Gemeentemuseum and Museum De Pont in Tilburg. It underscores how carpet is being increasingly used to create imaginative and colourful interior spaces, with companies like DESSO having design capabilities to turn design vision into practical or colourful reality. The colourful carpets in the office’s restaurant are based on Birza’s depictions of underwater realms, with the acoustic performance of having carpet on the walls also resulting in a subdued and intimate atmosphere. DESSO is a leading manufacturer of high quality carpet tiles and broadloom carpets and has been in operation for 80 years. It has factories in The Netherlands and Belgium and exports worldwide. With design and manufacturing expertise, a broad range of products and a commitment to real environmental sustainability, DESSO is being increasingly recognised as a supplier of choice to the public and residential sectors, and by many of the world’s leading companies, hotels, airlines and cruise ship operators. |
