Article NEW YORK—Consolidated Carpet, Bentley Prince Street, Invista and designers from 11 New York design firms came together to teach students from Bronx middle schools about sustainable design.

In honor of Earth Day, Consolidated co-sponsored 2010 Celebrate Earth with Bentley, Invista’s Antron and the Salvadori Center, a non-profit that selected the 44 student participants.

They partnered with designers, whose firms donated carpet sample boxes, carpet samples and a variety of design materials. Students worked alongside designers to decorate the boxes with carpet samples and other materials, repurposing the boxes as containers for art supplies.

“The students did outstanding design work,” said David Meberg, president and CEO of Consolidated, one of the nation’s premier full- service contractors. “It’s amazing to see so many young people excited about protecting the environment and wanting to learn how they can help.”

“The students were all very interested in the sustainability concepts we showed them,” said Beth Shoshan, Bentley’s regional vice president. “It was great to see the creative ways each child interpreted sustainability.”

Though the students competed for various creative prizes, Meberg said everyone went home a winner since they left not only with their own creations, but with candy trophies and bags of art supplies donated by The Greater New York Floor Coverers Association. Even those who couldn’t make the trip benefited because the unused materials from the workshop were sent back to the schools for use in art projects.
