| Article | Carpet can be many things, but rarely is it contemporary art. But that’s what a leading Dutch artist achieved with his installation Table Dance, at the Museum Waterland, Purmerend, in The Netherlands. Artist Ge-Karel van der Sterren, who lives and works in Amsterdam, created the colourful canvas, measuring approximately eight by seven metres, which was then woven into Axminster carpet by international carpet manufacturer DESSO. The artist’s concept was to create a dining table, complete with plates, cutlery and food – even down to a spilled glass of wine – with diners painted on the surrounding walls. “This was a hugely challenging, but very enjoyable, project for us – and demonstrates that, with the right design team, we can render virtually anything into carpet,” said Jos van Lanen, Manager Special Products, DESSO. Visitors to the exhibit were able to walk on the carpet, becoming participants in the Table Dance, rather than simply spectators. Ge-Karel is the winner of the Prix de Rome (1999), the Koninklijke subsidie voor vrijie schilderkunst (1999), the Jeanne Oosting Prize (2007) and has been nominated for the Wolvecamp Prize (2004). His work is characterised by large canvasses of immense colour, mostly in a sculptural style, with most colour applied in watery acrylic paint, but with highlight details painted in greater clarity. DESSO is a leading manufacturer of high quality carpet tiles and broadloom carpets, with factories in Europe, and headquartered in The Netherlands. DESSO has built an enviable reputation as a reliable partner producing quality flooring for a range of applications. Its products can be found in offices and public buildings, schools and universities, retail outlets, hospitals, as well as domestic interiors.
