| Article | HAMMONTON, N.J.—An alliance among industry players such as Mannington, Shaw, Armstrong, Mohawk and Beaulieu form part of INSTALL New Jersey, a group designed to promote the floor covering trade and provide training. In coordination with the Atlantic County Institute of Technology (ACIT) with funding from the New Jersey Department of Labor, high school students get a first hand look at the trade. Juniors and seniors in the carpentry program at ACIT observed the United Brotherhood of Carpentry over 10 trips to the organization’s apprenticeship school throughout the year. As a pre-apprenticeship curriculum for students, it is a great way to attract apprentices and showcase the INSTALL program, said Steve Gorman, president of Floor Layers Local 29. “We presented mockups of hardwood floors, vinyl and carpet, and had the kids do a project of their own,” he added. The program guarantees 10 slots in the four-year apprenticeship program of Local 29 and there are hopes to offer the program all four years at ACIT. To learn more about INSTALL, call 732.225.1300. |
