Article KANSAS CITY, MO.—Donald Schwartz, retired owner of Selectile of California has been selected as the 2009 recipient of the Tile Contractors Association of America’s (TCAA) Carl V. Cersery Award. The award will be presented to him at TCAA’s annual convention scheduled for Sept. 26 to 28 in Chicago.

Schwartz became a member of TCAA in the 1980s, served many years on its board and was its president in 1996 and 1997.

His involvement in the tile industry of Southern California has been extensive. He served on the Ceramic Tile Institute (CTI) board, was one of the first graduates of its Ceramic Tile Consultants course and later became a member of its planning and steering committee. He was president of the Associated Tile Contractors of Southern California and served on various committees.

In 1986, Schwartz became the sole owner of Selectile of California and remained there until his retirement in 2001. Under his leadership, Selectile won numerous awards from both TCAA and CTI for “its workmanship and beauty of tile installations throughout Southern California” in both residential and commercial applications. In 1986, CTI awarded five craftsmanship awards to Selectile—the most ever presented in a single year to a contractor. It also presented Schwartz its highest honor, naming him Contractor of the Year.
