| Article | BALTIMORE—Two veterans to the carpet industry, specifically carpet cushion, were part of a group of three pioneers and inventors inducted into the Polyurethane Foam Association’s (PFA) Flexible Polyurethane Foam (FPF) Hall of Fame at a special induction ceremony during the organization’s Spring General Business Meeting and Technical Program, held here. This year’s inductees included a former president of the Carpet Cushion Council (CCC) and the founder of one of the earliest and largest cushion manufacturers, as well as a pioneer in foam manufacturing equipment. Steve Riddle, PFA’s president, said the purpose of the FPF Hall of Fame, housed virtually at pfa.org, is to recognize individuals and corporations who have significantly contributed to the growth and betterment of the flexible polyurethane foam industry in North America. This year’s inductees were Warren Pollock, who was responsible for the design and setup of one of the first commercial flexible polyurethane foam manufacturing operations in the U.S., at Curtis Wright Corp., in the 1950s. Considered an astute engineer with a unique ability to apply mechanical engineering solutions to problems in the plant, he presided over the CCC during the early 1980s before getting out of the business in 1985. Karl Lens, along with his partner Irving Rifkin, founded Crest Foam Industries in Flushing, N.Y. The company, which was sold to Leggett & Platt and is now a division of British Vita, was not only the second U.S. producer of thermally reticulated foam, as well as a dominant regional supplier and one of the most diversified and technologically advanced foam companies in the country, it was an early manufacturer of carpet cushion. Lens, who was honored posthumously, was also an active member with CCC. Lens’ son, Jack, who is president of Mohawk Carpet Cushion, accepted his father’s posthumous award. Brian Blackwell, president of Beamech, accepted the award on behalf of his company, which was honored for its long history in the design and production of popular foam manufacturing equipment.
