Article Crossville’s Ultimetal Porcelain Stone tile, a Best of NeoCon gold award winner in the Hard Surface category, is porcelain stone tile overlaid with a metalized glaze, combining the appeal of metal with the durability of porcelain— in essence fusing technology and design.

Historically, metal tiles can scratch, so they are not appropriate for the floor. But Ultimetal is recommended for floors, walls, countertops, and backsplashes in both residential and commercial applications— indoors and outdoors—because it is scratch resistant, durable and extremely versatile.

Five solid metallic finishes— white, silver, black gray and copper—and six sleek or woven fabric-like textures are available. Combining Ultimetal with other stone tiles, such as decorative pieces on a stone wall, provides an even more unusual look.

“When people think metal, they usually think contemporary, but the woven feel of many of the Ultimetal tiles are traditional and can even provide the look of wallpaper,” said Katie Harrell, Crossville’s designer. “Tile is continuing to evolve and climb higher on the creativity scale. We are way past the days of beige and other neutral tile as the only go-to choices. In fact, our Ultimetal mosaics are so beautiful they could even be fashioned into jewelry.”

Ultimetal comes in 12 x 24, 24-inch and 6 x 24 sizes. Accents include boldly patterned 2 x 2 mosaics as well as 2 x 24 and 12 x 24 listellos. Because the tiles are all rectified and modular, they lend themselves to a variety of installation patterns in virtually unlimited combinations. For example, designers can create a minimalist look with large expanses of field tile, or they can take their designs in a more dramatic direction with boldly patterned mosaics and listellos.

“Because it has pizzazz, yet is extremely durable and easy to maintain, Ultimetal should prove to be an exceptionally exciting option for heavy-use retail and hospitality installations,” said Laurie Lyza, Crossville’s director of marketing.
