| Article | ANAHEIM, CALIF.—Scott Steel, CFE, president and owner of My Flooring America in Webster, Tex., was appointed chairman of the World Floor Covering Association (WFCA) effective July 1. He takes over from Brooks Mancini, chairman emeritus of B.T. Mancini Co. in Reno, Nev., who becomes immediate past chairman, replacing Donny Phillips Jr., CFE, president of Atlanta Flooring Design Center in Suwanee, Ga. Steel, who has had a meteoric rise within the ranks of WFCA since joining the board in 2007, is a 16-year industry veteran. In 2004, he purchased the family business outright, and today it consists of three stores in the Houston area with a fourth opening this fall. He is also a partner in a new Flooring America in Texarkana, Tex., that opened in April. His WFCA resume is equally impressive. Along with having served as the organization’s treasurer/CFO as well as vice chairman of its finance committee, Steel is the only person to have ever been elected to the board and executive committee simultaneously. Chris Davis, WFCA’s president and CEO, said Steel’s rapid movement within the association is a testament to the esteem he enjoys with his colleagues. “Scott has a very easy going, friendly demeanor. He’s a big guy with a big personality and giant smile. He is also exceedingly bright and sharp, and has a natural leadership ability that is very collegial and collaborative.” Steel’s term coincides with WFCA’s 50th anniversary and he anticipates using the milestone to initiate several programs while building on existing ones that focus on creating additional benefits and value for WFCA members and the entire floor covering industry. “In the economic environment we find ourselves in, it is essential we find ways to identify common interests and have all elements of the industry begin to work in concert for our mutual benefit.” At the same time, he said WFCA needs to build on and strengthen what is working. “While we explore new options with industry partners, we’ll keep doing that which we are already doing and is working effectively.” As an example of a valuable contribution the organization is making to the industry, Steel cited the association’s public relations and marketing initiatives aimed at educating consumers about flooring options and driving them to WFCA member stores. “You’ll see us continue to invest in that area,” he added, “particularly our award-winning consumer Web site, wfca.org, and Beautiful Flooring, the consumer magazine venture launched last year with Meredith Corp.’s Better Homes & Gardens Special Interest Publications.” The consumer magazine was initiated under Mancini, who Davis called a positive influence during what has been a difficult economic climate. “Brooks came along at a tough time for the entire industry and served as a very calming, steady influence, making certain we stayed on course and true to our long range plan.” He added, in addition to launching Beautiful Flooring it was under Mancini’s regime “that we improved our communications/efforts with members to provide them with solutions for making their businesses more successful.” |
