Article QUOTABLE: In these difficult times when uncertainty rules the day and doubt holds us hostage, it’s refreshing, and reassuring, to hear words drenched in confidence that inspire us. A few days ago, I received an email from my good friend Mark Woods, president and CEO of Ideal Floorcovering in East Falmouth, Mass., and I was impressed by its uplifting message. Mark wrote: “I was in Orlando (Fla.) with Shaw Industries and I came home with a great quote from my friend Randy Merritt (president of Shaw). Simply stated, ‘If business is off 30%, then there’s still 70% out there. Go get it!’” Merritt is a motivator extraordinaire. Mark concluded: “The truly successful always look forward with a positive attitude. No one has ever been successful running his business or his life looking in the rear view mirror. You must look through windows. That will bring back confidence.” Amen.

FRAN THE MAN: Longtime friend and confidant Fran O’Neill has decided to retire after almost 40 years in an industry that he loved and that loved him. He launched his career in 1971 as a salesman for Beattie Manufacturing Co., a carpet mill in Little Falls, N.J. In 1979, he joined Karastan Rug Mills, a division of Fieldcrest Mills and became executive vice president of sales and marketing for its residential division. In 1988, he became Congoleum’s senior vice president of sales and marketing. Then, in 1997, he and Dan McGovern founded Antrim Carpets USA, a successful agency. In November 2007, Stanton Carpet acquired Antrim and he retired from that company. Fran O’Neill is a unique man, abundantly skilled and a gifted executive who has earned the admiration and respect of his colleagues and competitors. His charismatic presence and compelling leadership will be missed. Good luck, old buddy.

TIMELY TIP: Most businesses in the current economic climate are trying to curtail expenses and increase income wherever possible. Well, I just received this notice and thought I would share it. The National Association for the Exchange of Industrial Resources (NAEIR) urges, “don’t spend money storing your slow- moving or no-moving products, donate the stuck stock to NAEIR and receive a tax deduction for the effort.” Sounds good. Donate to charity and file under Section 170 (e) (3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code. NAEIR helps, elementary and high schools, community centers, rescue missions, shelters for abused women and children, hospitals, nursing homes and many other social service agencies. NOTABLE: Godfrey Hirst USA, the 9th largest carpet mill in the world, named its Sales Agency of the Year 2008 and presented the award to Lane Sales during its annual national sales meeting during Surfaces 2009. Larry Lane, president, and Mark Levy, vice president, were presented the award by John Sheffield, head of Hirst. Lane Sales, which is headquartered on Long Island and maintains a sales office in New York City, also won Hirst’s Centurion Award for exceeding one million dollars in sales...At its recent Winter Convention at the Gaylord Texan Resort, Carpet One named IVC US its Partner of the Year. The award was accepted by Xavier Steyaert, president and CEO of IVC…Greg Jones, senior environmental engineer for Mohawk Industries, has been elected to the board of directors of the Georgia Industry Environmental Coalition (GIEC) for 2009. GIEC is a non-profit membership organization of environmentally-regulated businesses in Georgia, with an employee base of more than 55,000. Its mission is to serve as a technically-based advocate for Georgia industry by promoting environmental regulations and policies founded on protection of human health and the environment, sound science and cost/benefit principles.
