| Article | BOCA RATON, FLA.—His long career in the carpet industry and distinguished record won him the respect and admiration of his colleagues and competitors alike. He spent more than 40 years in the industry, and when he retired a dozen or so years ago, he said, “I enjoyed it all and especially the wonderful people I met along the way.” David Shapiro recently suffered a massive stroke, which led to complications that caused his death. He passed Dec. 18, two weeks before his 88th birthday. Born in Manhattan on Jan.1, 1921, Shapiro attended Dewitt Clinton High School and, after graduation, was inducted into the Army and served in the Pacific Theater of Operations. Honorably discharged at war’s end, he joined William Morris, a talent agency. Not happy being a personal agent, he decided to change his course and through his brother, who was a builder, he landed a job with Aldon Rug Mills as a salesman. After several years, he was recruited to be president of Lack Carpet Co., a prominent Mohawk distributor headquartered in New York. When Mohawk divested itself of Lack, Shapiro joined Erich Arje, his brother-in-law, and they formed the Arje Shapiro Partnership, a manufacturer’s representative. The business thrived for several years until the partners retired. Survivors include his wife, Natalie; daughter, Nancy; son, Stephen, an attorney in New York, and three grandchildren. A sister, Estelle Arje, predeceased him by a month. |
