Article ATLANTA—With the next installment of the nation’s biggest rug event, the Atlanta International Area Rug Market featuring the National Oriental Rug Show (NORS), which includes the opening of a new building, Two West Wing, set for Jan. 7 to 12, officials say the show is more than just about product.

Education continues to play an important role for the event, as visitors will discover a host of seminars from AmericasMart University (AMU)—the area rug industry’s most complete retail business education program, noted Chas Sydney, senior vice president, area rugs.

“This year,” he explained, “our program will give buyers unmatched learning opportunities with a slate of facilitators drawn from the highest echelon of designers, consultants and business practitioners.”

In a standing curriculum offering retail business basics, buying and selling and building your brand, with beginner, intermediate, and advanced classes scheduled in each, attendees will profit from the expertise of several industry leaders, he noted. Classes will help define and explore best practices for business, style and design, and more.

Plus, the January AMU lineup adds a market exclusive: Safavieh hosting a designer dialogue featuring Suzanne Kasler, Jamie Drake and David Easton, preceding a showroom ribbon cutting celebration.

Additional classes include “A Crash Course on Buying,” a session on buying/selling for the beginner, presented by Mercedes Gonzales in Building Three, Third Floor Conference Center, on Thursday, Jan. 8, from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon. Another seminar later that day is “Training the Best Sales Team,” also a retail basics class for the beginner, also presented by Gonzales, in Building Three, Third Floor Conference Center, from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The “Unique & Antique Rug Forum,” a retail basics class for beginners, is sponsored by the Oriental Rug Retailers Association (ORRA), and will take place in Building One, room 4-G-7 on Friday, Jan. 9 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. “Walk the (Area Rug) Market with Phil,” also a retail basics seminar for beginners, is presented by Phil Menendian and is also sponsored by ORRA. It takes place in Building One, in ORRA’s booth #1200 on Saturday, Jan. 10 at 11 a.m.
