Kate Hopkins is a high-end customer with a real concern for the environment. She wants to take her designer’s advice and use hardwood floors in her house remodel but worries about the impact on the environment. The designer advises that the new hardwood floors will provide the beauty, warmth, durability and ease of use that she and her husband are seeking. But still, there’s that concern about the forests and being green. The flooring retailer knows there is an easy solution to this environmental concern. That solution is the Hardwood Forestry Fund.

The Hardwood Forestry Fund is a 501 (c)(3) educational foundation that creates sustainable forests. The fund is supported by tax-deductible contributions from the forest products industry, its suppliers, retailers and even a few environmentally concerned consumers. Long before green was the trend, these pro-active and leading contributors were creating forests for the future: Armstrong World Industries, Columbia Forest Products, Mannington Wood Floors, Anderson Hardwood Floors, Appalachian Engineered Floors, WalzCraft Industries, Sheoga Hardwood Flooring and 84 Lumber Co. You can see a complete list of Hardwood Forestry Fund members and link to individual company Web sites at the www.hardwoodforestryfund.org “Meet our Members” section.

The Hardwood Forestry Fund is important because it creates partnerships with businesses and natural resource agencies to replace trees used in the manufacture of wood products. Through tree planting and forest management, the HFF and its members create sustainable forests on public land. These emerging forests are managed by professional foresters to provide a multitude of benefits, including enhanced wildlife habitat, improved water quality, educational benefits to private landowners and quality timber production.

Once established, these forests provide a continuing supply of forest benefits and will continue to provide those long after the trees become floors. In another 80 years, the next generation of trees will be ready to become Kate’s grandkids’ new floors.

So if your customer wants wood, she can feel good about that green choice. Why? Because wood is a renewable and sustainable resource. The forest products industry and flooring manufacturers are making sure we replace what we use for an abundant and high-quality supply for the future. Hardwood Forestry Fund members are encouraged to use the tree logo to show customers tangible proof of their environmental commitment.
