| Article | Confindustria Ceramica and the Italian Trade Commission (ITC) announced the winners of the 2008 Ceramic Tiles of Italy Design Competition. Celebrating its 15th anniversary, the competition, recognizes North American architects who design projects employing innovative uses of Italian ceramic tile. Prizes ($5,000 to each winner) are awarded for excellence in residential, commercial and institutional architecture. “There was a tie this year in the residential category,” said a spokeswoman for Ceramic Tiles of Italy. The two awards were given to Division 1 Architects of Silver Spring, Md., for the Roberts Residence in Bethesda, Md., which made extensive use of Italian tile on both the exterior and the interior of the house, and Koji Tsutsui of San Francisco for his modern Industrial Designer House in Tokyo. As the international jury for the competition noted, this year’s projects were more inventive than ever, emphasizing the innate diversity and sustainability of Italian tile. “When American designers work with Italian materials, great things happen,” the judges said. Criteria for entering and winning the competition included new construction and renovation projects completed between January 2003 and January 2008 that incorporated Italian tile. The jury critiqued the artistic and technical aspects of each project. It considered the creative uses of tile and how it fits into the overall design aesthetic. The winner of the Commercial category was BKA Architects for the Samsonite headquarters in Mansfield, Mass. Also receiving recognition in this category was Gieseke Rosenthal Architecture & Design from Columbus, Ohio, for its Northstar Café project. The Institutional award went to Richard Fleischman & Partners Architects for the Cleveland Job Corps Center for the Department of Labor, a project that used tile as the main exterior surface for a nine building campus. “Also,” explained the Ceramic Tiles of Italy spokeswoman, “this year we awarded a Legend Award for the first time. It went to Michael Johnson for his commitment to innovative design using Italian tile.” For more information on the annual design contest, visit www.tilecompetition.com. |
