Article DALTON—US Floors, maker of such products as Natural Cork, is on schedule for the year-end opening of its state-of-the-art cork and bamboo flooring manufacturing facility here, according to Piet Dossche, CEO.

The 100,000-square-foot facility will also house the company’s corporate offices, represents an investment of approximately $10 million and, according to published reports, is expected to create more than a dozen jobs.

“With the start of our manufacturing here,” Dossche explained, “we are putting our money where our mouth is by investing heavily in our cork and bamboo offerings, as well as other sustainable flooring products. In addition, the facility will be producing unique and sustainable floors and FSC certified wood products.”

The facility is being designed to be certified under the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program. One of its unique features will be generating alternative energy through photovoltaic solar panels on the roof. Dossche said this will be a first for a flooring manufacturing facility in North America.

“With green awareness gaining increased importance at an accelerating pace,” he added, “I am convinced within the next five to 10 years those houses and commercial buildings with no features focusing on environmental conservation will be more difficult to lease or sell and will be considerably less valuable than those properties which have recognized and embraced the importance of green building construction practices.

“We truly believe the trend toward the use of environmentally responsible flooring, both residential and commercial, is only at the beginning of its growth curve,” Dossche noted.
