Article DALTON—Mohawk Industries is adding yet another element to its commitment for environmental responsibility and sustainability throughout the supply chain with the introduction of the GreenWorks Dealer of the Year Award.

The contest is open to any specialty floor covering retailer who openly practices environmental responsibility and demonstrates work toward sustainability in both his business and community.

Jenny Cross, Mohawk’s Residential senior sustainability manager, said the award is based on three key criteria:

• Economic Responsibility. Without a strong financial footing and growth, she explained, no retailer can continue to operate and support the overall community in which he lives and works with regards to jobs and economic stability.

• Social Commitment. When communities thrive, Cross noted, businesses thrive. The best retailers are the ones who are active within and making an impact on their communities.

• Environmental Initiative. Every flooring dealer should strive to conserve resources, reduce waste and support environmentally friendly products, she added.

“Understanding sustainability is first,” Cross said. “It isn’t just recycling or reusing. Rather, it’s achieving balance in a community’s economic, social. and environmental components— like a three-legged stool. All three legs have to be equal in order to be able to provide the proper support.”

Along with winning the award itself, the GreenWorks Dealer of the Year will be presented with $5,000 by Mohawk to donate to a sustainable cause, or use for another sustainable-based effort of his choice.

In addition, up to five retailers will be recognized as honorable mentions, and will be given $1,000 for the sustainable cause or effort of their choice.

A panel of three independent sustainable professionals have been selected by Mohawk to judge the contest. Floor covering industry members can nominate any dealer whom they feel practices true sustainability, Cross said. Also, dealers are allowed to nominate themselves.

She stressed that many floor covering stores already have numerous sustainability practices in place that would make them eligible for the award. “Many dealers I’ve talked to have had recycling programs in place for years, covering carpet cushion, removed carpet, cardboard, bottles and other materials. They’ve looked carefully at their stores’ energy use to cut costs, and they’ve been active in their communities to support local causes and charities. Those are all things that make a store an ideal candidate to be named as the GreenWorks Dealer of the Year.”

Nominations began being taken on Sept. 15 and will continue through Oct. 31. Winners will be announced in late November.
