Article CARTERSVILLE, GA.—Shaw Contract Group again honored seven firms whose projects “define the concept of design” in its third annual Design Is... Award competition. The company said the winning projects “surmount simple beauty by delivering innovative solutions that positively impact the people who inhabit a space and the functions that take place there.”

Winning firms are chosen by a panel of five judges—all distinguished members of the design community—and are recognized in an upcoming ad campaign, receive an original sculpture award and are given a $2,000 scholarship to present to an organization of choice.

This year’s Design Is... winners are:

• Envision Design for its work on the International Interior Design Association in Chicago, which is now a LEED-CI Gold facility that is focused on functionality, flexibility and sustainability.

• Gensler for the redesign of its own Houston office, which earned the space LEED Silver certification and placed the firm’s corporate identity, sustainable design and capabilities front-and-center.

• MCM Interiors for its work with Electronic Arts, which focused on attracting talent, inspiring creativity, optimizing staff and infrastructure and enhancing corporate communications.

• OWP/P for its design for Transwestern Commercial Services, which utilizes the Chicago cityscape and focuses on the use of light and is also LEED certified.

• SAB Architects and Nell Studio in their combined office design for Turner ConstructionCo. in Seattle, which breaks barriers between people and departments.

• VOA Associates for its renovation to RMB Capital Management’s Chicago office, which exemplifies international style, pays homage to the mid-20th century building and reflects the company’s values.

• Partridge Architects, which won the People’s Choice Award, for its work on Logan Circle Partners in Philadelphia— bringing warmth and security to the asset management firm. This award is decided each year by Shaw Contract Group’s Web site visitors.

The Design Is... Award promotes successful design strategies that are improving the work of clients, while allowing those that inhabit these spaces to realize a greater purpose and meaning for their activities, said John Stephens, vice president of marketing for Shaw Contract Group. “This award competition celebrates the decision makers, the leaders in the interior design industry that are constantly redefining design and the way it impacts our businesses and our lives.”

The competition is open to all professional interior design and architect firms that have used Shaw Contract Group carpet on a project that has been completed in at most two years.

Entry forms for the 2009 Design Is... Award are currently available at the mill’s Web site www.shawcontractgroup.com.
