Article SHARP MOVE: Western Carpet & Linoleum, a distributorship founded in Brooklyn in 1923 by Harry Henick and passed on to his sons Murray and Kenny, is now being operated by grandsons Jeffrey, president, and Alan, CEO/CFO. The 85- year-old company moved from its original location in 1958 to a building on Wythe Ave. in Brooklyn, where it remained for the next half century. The Henicks just sold that facility and purchased the building in Wayne, N.J., that was formerly the headquarters of Hoboken Flooring. The brothers also bought the land at the new site, 70 Demarest Drive, and say they plan to be in their new headquarters some time in September. Western out of Brooklyn…it’s the end of an era.

TEE TIME: CCA Global Partners is holding its 6th annual golf event to benefit the Floor Covering Industry Foundation (FCIF) on Thursday, Sept. 25, at the Marriott’s Evergreen Conference Resort in Stone Mountain, Ga. Renamed to honor one of its founders, the Alan Greenberg Charity Golf Tournament will feature an 11:30 a.m. shotgun start, box lunch followed by cocktails, awards and dinner. Since 2003, the enormously successful event has raised more than $600,000 for the FCIF, by far among its most productive sources of income. For more than two decades, the Foundation has been assisting those in our industry who have experienced a catastrophic illness, a severe disability or life-altering hardship. To be part of this important industry undertaking and to register, contribute, sponsor or advertise in the tournament journal, contact Paula Holt at 314.506.0041 or pholt@ccaglobal.com. Many will be grateful if you do.

KUDOS: Hanley Wood, owner of Surfaces, has pledged $500,000 over 25 years to the FCIF, fulfilling a commitment to that organization while entering into an agreement with the World Floor Covering Association (WFCA) guaranteeing $20,000 a year through 2033. The WFCA is the administration arm of the FCIF, donating its services to the not-for-profit group, ensuring that contributions go directly to recipients undiluted by expenses. Since Hanley Wood purchased Surfaces from the WFCA in 2000, it has been an outstanding supporter of the FCIF, in addition to its financial contributions it provides a conference room and breakfast for annual board of directors’ meetings at Surfaces, booth space and other amenities. Hanley Wood is Hanley Good.

ACTION: ABC Carpet, premier retailer in New York City, isn’t sitting around waiting for things to happen, it has created lots of excitement with its Aug. 8 launch of a three-month exhibition and sale of antique and vintage rugs with stars and stripes motifs. With the Olympics at this end and the election at the other, ABC calls the event Super Stars and Wild Stripes and features rare and unique rugs from various countries in bold colors and intriguing prints. Graham Head, vice chairman of ABC Carpet, described the exhibition: “This collection is an excellent representation of the worldwide cross-pollination of design.” It’s on the 6th floor of ABC Carpet & Home.

CHECK IT OUT: Included with this issue of Floor Covering News is the Laminate Guide, a 32-page comprehensive magazine designed and dedicated to help more retailers sell the product properly and eliminate claims and problems that might occur after the sale. FCNews was the first flooring publication in the U.S. to write about laminates, and in 1996 devoted two issues to it in an effort to educate dealers, salespeople and installers on the industry’s newest segment. Now, this first stand-alone magazine includes stories on ease of installation; ease of maintenance; durability; environmental friendliness; merchandising; mill support with retailers, and so much more. Read it, enjoy it and keep it as a handy reference.
