| Article | DALTON—The Carpet & Rug Institute (CRI) was recently named the first certified body for indoor air quality (IAQ) in the soft flooring segment by the American National Standard Institute (ANSI). This is due in large to the organization’s Green Label and Green Label Plus programs, which are in compliance with both the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Guide 65— required to operate product certification programs. “CRI is proud to have the first and only ANSI-certified green carpet program in the United States,” said Werner Braun, president. “We set the standard with the Green Label program, and now we are raising the bar with this prestigious ANSI certification that recognizes best practices for indoor IAQ testing and certification.” Though the ANSI accreditation is currently only for carpet, CRI is moving forward to include adhesives, carpet cushion, vacuums, carpet cleaning products, cleaning equipment and service providers. “Architects, builders and specifiers can have full confidence that Green Label and Green Label Plus carpet is a desirable, attractive, green building product,” Braun explained. “They can rest assured they are purchasing the very lowest emitting products on the market.” CRI’s Green Label program started in 1992. This was enhanced in 2002—The Green Label Plus program—when California’s IAQ program and the Sustainable Building Task Force approved Green Label Plus certification with regards to Section 01350. CRI began the ANSI certification process in June 2006—including green carpet program audits by Georgia Tech Enterprise Innovation Institute, an ANSI team and CRI’s third-party indoor laboratory, Air Quality Science of Atlanta.
