| Article | Hakatai glass mosaic tile was specified by Dawson & Clinton General Contractors for all bathrooms in an extensive renovation to a four-unit apartment complex on Natoma Street in San Francisco, California. The color and rustic character of the tiles added warmth to Dawson & Clinton’s Victorian-inspired building makeover, while the choice of material added a modern twist to the theme. The tile was used throughout the four bathrooms. Dawson & Clinton purchased the multi-family building, then transformed it. The classic look of white surfaces and hardwoods was updated by the use of glass tile. The rough-edged elegance of Hakatai’s Ashland series tile provides a historic feel to the rooms, and the color chosen, Ginger Tea, complements the other materials used. The bathroom in each one-bedroom unit received 80 square feet of tile. The tile was used in the tub surrounds, all three walls of each shower, the countertops, as well as the half-wall backsplashes behind the raised vestibule sinks. All tile for the project was installed by Rafael Anaya of Anaya Tile company, in a floating mortar bed over sheetrock with an isolation membrane to protect against moisture in the bathroom application. “We were looking for a distressed glass tile,” said Paul Dawson, co-owner of Dawson & Clinton. “Even though it’s a new tile it appears to have history. It’s a nice warm color with a contemporary feel. We ordered directly from Hakatai. The service was very good. One of the main things is, for glass tile, Hakatai is very cost-effective.” Dawson & Clinton has used Hakatai’s Ashland series tile in other projects. One residential project, which featured Ashland series Tricycle Red Blend tile in the bathroom, received recognition from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry. With an array of colors, the Ashland series can provide charm and character in a variety of applications. Hakatai is expanding the series this year to include new sizes and finishes. The series will also contain recycled glass.
