Article DALTON (February 11, 2008)—For the second consecutive year, Mohawk Industries has been selected to Training Magazine’s “Top 125” training organizations. This is the most elite ranking among Fortune 500 companies for Training and Learning Development.

To qualify for the Training Top 125, company training organizations are measured, selected and ranked on both quantitative and qualitative data. Key factors influencing the rankings include training tied to business objectives; leadership development programs; tuition assistance to employees; number of trainers and subject matter experts; certification programs; and others. An outside research and statistical data company makes the initial recommendations.

This year’s overall winner was Price-Waterhouse-Cooper. Mohawk jumped from its ranking of 64th last year to 19th in this year’s evaluations. Mohawk was praised for its New Hire Sales College, which recruits and trains young men and women for a career in sales, and for Antioch plant coater operator training that resulted in significant measurable results. Additionally, Mohawk Greenworks training, which involved the entire sales team, staff, through plant personal, was singled out as an example of training tied to company objectives.

Collectively, the Mohawk Learning organizations cross all divisions of Mohawk, including Dal-tile University, Mohawk Home, Logistics, Customer Service, Human Resources, Safety, and Mohawk University.

“Just to make this list is a high achievement. To be recognized as one of the top education organizations in American Business is a major honor—and a reflection of the ideas and work that Mohawk University employees put into our program,” said Mike Zoellner, Vice President of Learning Development for Mohawk. “Training and education is a critical part of our partnership with Mohawk dealers and employees, and it becomes more important as our business becomes more competitive.”

Zoellner noted that the flooring industry was well represented in the awards program. In addition to Mohawk, Shaw Industries, and the Tandus Group (Collins & Aikman) were also ranked in the top 100. “This recognition and the efforts of the Carpet & Rug Institute (CRI) CEU program really serve to underscore this industry’s commitment to training and education,” he said.

Among other organizations included in the 2008 winners were Microsoft (9th), Verizon Wireless (4th), General Mills (7th), McDonalds (37th), Best Buy (44th), Delta Airlines (69th), the Home Depot (64th), UPS (49th), and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (58th).

Mohawk was recognized at an awards banquet conducted by Training Magazine in February. Attending for Mohawk were Zoellner; Mike Ferris, Director of Training, Dal-tile; Anne Reynolds, Training and Communications Manager, Mohawk Home; Susan McGowan, Director of Corporate Training and Administration; Kirk Williams, National Sales Training Director, Mohawk; April Wilder, Manager Mohawk University Retail Group; and Mary Malek, Corporate Training Manager.

Mohawk University, the residential flooring training arm of Mohawk Industries, teaches thousands of people each year how to become experts in different aspects of the floor covering business, covering everything from installation to business operations. Courses can help novices learn the fundamentals, or make seasoned veterans even better.

Mohawk University has won numerous awards for its seminars and programs, both within and outside the floorcovering industry, and has been recognized by professional training organizations internationally for its work, including leading trade organizations, Media Communications Association International, and the American Advertising Federation.
