Article Dalton—The Carpet & Rug Institute (CRI) recently announced the first commercial vacuum cleaners to earn certification under its new Seal of Approval/Green Label testing program (FCNews Oct. 1/8).

The new certification vacuum program is tiered with bronze being entry-level, silver mid-level and gold awarded to the machines meeting the highest-level of testing criteria.

CRI announced that in the initial set of vaccums to be tested under the new program the Proteam Sierra CM and the TTI Rubbermaid prototype earned the highest gold certification. At the same time, the Electrolux Sanitaire, Windsor NuWay and Windsor Versamatic VS18 were awarded silver certification, while the Windsor Flexamatic 12, Windsor Senor S15, Windsor Senor S12, Windsor Versamatic VS14, Proteam ProForce 1500XP and Proteam Super Coach W/154E each earned bronze certification.

Werner Braun, CRI’s president, said the vacuums were approved after meeting the following criteria:

•Soil removal. CRI uses NASA-enhanced X-ray fluorescence technology to measure the precise amount of soil removed from carpet—companies under the program are eligible to display the Space Foundation Seal as well due to the use of the technology.

•Indoor air quality (dust containment). The vacuum may not release more than 100 micrograms of dust particles per cubic meter of air.

•Carpet fiber protection. The vacuum must not affect the texture of the carpet more than a one-step change based on one year of regular vacuum use.

“The Seal of Approval/ Green Label program sets a new higher standard for cleaning effectiveness and indoor air quality,” Braun said. “Facility managers and those who supervise carpet cleaning in office building and retail, commercial and hospitality spaces now have a way to identify top-performing vacuum cleaners. And, cleaning with the right equipment helps preserve the life and beauty of the carpet.”
