| Article | Hakatai glass mosaic tile was specified by Joel M. Karr, principal and owner of Group 41 Incorporated, for the craftsman-style renovation of a turn of the century cottage in the historic Noe Valley section of San Francisco. Originally constructed as a temporary shelter after the 1906 earthquake, the 2,100 square foot cottage was in desperate need of extensive renovation and modernization. Group 41 embellished the remaining hints of craftsman architecture, then utilized materials like the glass mosaic tile in the bathrooms for a modern, contemporary spin on the traditional style popularized in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Karr was loyal to craftsman tradition in the main living areas of the house, but decided that the bath and kitchen did not meet the needs of modern city dwellers. He chose high-end Italian cabinetry and warm wood tones for the kitchen, and used Hakatai glass mosaic tile in the master bath, powder room, and second bathroom shower stall. For the master bath, Hakatai’s Ashland series 1” x 1” glass mosaic tile in the color Clear Ice was used for the tub surround. Shades of blue were also used as accent tiles in conjunction with the travertine flooring, creating a floor pattern Karr described as “absolutely gorgeous.” For the upstairs powder room, Karr wanted a wall and floor that “melted into each other.” Hakatai’s Ashland series glass mosaic tile in the color Mint Cream was used to create a curved base formation. The corner edge seems to disappear, giving an illusion of space. Ashland series tiles feature hand-cut edges and natural shade variations, lending a unique character to surfaces. “The glass tiles in general add an air of real elegance and sleek modernism to the space, without being too hard-edged modern,” said Karr. The house “is heavily influenced by craftsman overtones. We didn’t want to be too stark and modernist, but we did want very ‘fresh' and contemporary feeling living spaces.” For the second bathroom, Karr specified Hakatai’s Cobblestone series, a hand-made, glass mosaic tile that emulates the curves and surfaces of natural river stones. Cobblestone series Tumbled Gray tile was used for the floor of the shower stall. “I have been using Hakatai products for years,” says Karr. “They are terrific, both in terms of quality and service. I love the products. And have never had even the slightest complaint with the quality and the responsiveness of their prompt and courteous service.” For more information, please contact Hakatai Enterprises at: 701 Mistletoe Road, Ashland, Oregon 97520, or by phone: 541-552-0855, fax: 541-552-0861, or email: info@hakatai.com.
