Article Anaheim, Calif.—Donny Phillips, president of Atlanta Flooring Design Centers, based in Duluth, Ga., takes over as chairman of the World Floor Covering Association (WFCA). The 24-year flooring industry veteran, who started his retail store 22 years ago at age 25, replaces Robert Hill, CEO of Floor Covering Associates in Shorewood, Ill., who is now immediate past chairman in place of Aaron Pirner, president and CEO of CAP Carpet based in Wichita, Kan.

Phillips, an active WFCA member since 2001, has previously served in various board level functions, including vice chairman, corporate secretary and treasurer/CFO. He has also chaired on several key committees throughout the years.

According to the new chairman, the association will continue to enhance its leadership role as the prime source for consumers searching the Internet for unbiased information about floor covering purchases. It will also be able to direct those parties to its member dealers.

Phillips plans to do this by making a concerted effort to work closely within the WFCA, as well as other associations and manufacturers, asking what the association can do for them. “We plan to work hard to improve relationships with other associations in the industry—hardwood, tile, etc.” said Phillips. His thoughts on process include unity and open lines of communication.

He noted, in addition, the group will continue to support the Floor Covering B2B Association, ensuring the B2B effort is promoted to broaden wide scale adoption. “I believe working in concert with other components of the flooring industry can only improve business for everyone and fully guarantee the satisfaction and value of a flooring purchase by the customer,” he said. “For example, you’ll see the WFCA being fully supportive of developing an ANSI standard for carpet installation by working with all interested parties toward that common goal.”

The WFCA, under Phillips, is also developing an unbiased Web site in an effort to be an honest broker of information to the general population. The new site will provide industry knowledge and will direct users to specific dealer locations depending on what flooring they are looking for.

Along with Phillips, the board elected Jeri Pischke, vice president of Home Valu Interiors in Fridley, Minn., as chairman-elect; and confirmed Brooks Mancini, chairman emeritus of B.T. Mancini Co. in Reno, Nev., as treasurer/CFO and Sam O’Krent, president of Abbey Flooring Center in San Antonio, Tex., as corporate secretary. Rounding out the association’s executive committee, directors also appointed Fred Schmidt, president and CEO of Century Tile & Carpet in Lombard, Ill., and Scott Steel, president of My Flooring America in Webster, Tex., as vice chairmen. Chris Davis remains president and CEO of the WFCA.

The group continued elections, instating a new third of its board of directors, as it does each year, to a three-year term. This year’s recently elected directors include: John Erabacher of Carpet One of Billings in Billings, Mont.; Kelby Frederick of Flooring America of Denton in Denton, Tex.; Paul F. Johnson of Interiors One, Inc., Carpet One in Tulsa, Okla., and Jim Walters of Macco’s Floor Covering Center in Green Bay, Wis.
