Article | Lewes, Delaware (May 24, 2007)--- Saving lives and fuel by reducing aggressive driving is the focus of a highway safety public awareness campaign launched by the O.C. Floor Gallery at its Mohawk Floorscapes showroom on Highway One in Lewes. The kickoff of the summer-long campaign, “Floor It…But Not On The Highway,” marks the beginning of the long Memorial Day holiday weekend which officially signals the start of the 2007 summer driving season. “We are calling on everyone who travels this long holiday weekend to help us keep our roads in Delaware, Maryland and elsewhere, safe,” stated Chris Williams, President, O.C. Floor Gallery, who was joined by more than 50 law enforcement officers, firefighters, paramedics, doctors, and nurses as part of the anti-aggressive driving effort. The Honorable James L. Ford III, Mayor of Lewes, also attended and commended the O.C. Floor Gallery for leading the campaign. “Aggressive driving is blamed in more than half of all fatal motor vehicle crashes in Delaware,” stated Andrea Summers, community relations officer for the Delaware Office of Highway Safety. In 2006, aggressive driving behaviors were responsible for 52% of all fatal crashes in Delaware, according to Summers. The kickoff announcement included the Delaware State Police helicopter, motorcycle unit, and the newly created bicycle section that will patrol the heavily traveled shopping outlets along Highway One. Lewes Police Chief Ronald Gooch and Rehoboth Beach Police Chief Keith W. Banks joined Delaware State Police Superintendent Colonel Thomas F. MacLeish for the kickoff event, along with officers from Dewey Beach and Bethany Police Departments. Sussex County EMS coordinated fire and paramedic displays from Lewes Fire Department and Rehoboth Beach Fire Company. Beebe Medical Center was represented by Jeffrey M. Fried and several doctors and nurses, some of whom work in the facility’s trauma and injury prevention units. The O.C. Floor Gallery is helping customers divert their savings on all residential flooring contracts through Labor Day as tax deductible donations to the Floor It…But Not On The Highway campaign. The effort raised more than $15,000 last year in Ocean City, Maryland. For more details, please contact Chuck Jackson at the O.C.
