Article I have just visited the Web sites of a major hard surface floor covering manufacturer and a major hard surface flooring national association. In an effort to sell their hard surface products they lead one to believe that carpet is an unhealthy choice for a floor covering because, according to them, carpet harbors harmful human allergens.

That kind of information is no way to sell their flooring products, and it may be erroneous as well, since carpet may be one of the healthiest floor coverings one can have in a home or business. Carpet pile collects and holds harmful human allergens until they are released with proper vacuuming and proper professional cleaning. By holding those allergens, they are not allowed to become airborne and, thus, humans can not ingest them with breathing.

Non-absorbent hard surface flooring allow those harmful allergens to become airborne with normal air flow currents caused by foot traffic and HVAC systems. Therefore, instead of the carpet pile being the filter, the human lung becomes the filter, which may then trigger harmful human reactions to those pollutants.

The cost of maintenance of the hard surface flooring becomes significant, since it needs to be properly cleaned on a more frequent basis.

I strongly suggest that anyone who is concerned about those types of pollutants contact the Carpet & Rug Institute (CRI), which can provide intelligent studies and proof that the contention by those hard surface manufacturers and associations that carpet in unhealthy, is simply incorrect.

Carpet advertising does not knock hard surface flooring as being unhealthy, so hard surface floor covering advertising should eliminate the improper negativity toward soft surfaces, and just honestly present its products.

We present all floor coverings equally at a consumer level, as they should at a manufacturing level.
