Article MENDHAM, N.J.—He spent almost all of his career with Congoleum Corp. in Kearny, N.J., rising from assistant district manager to president. In retirement 20 years, Harry F. Pearson, Sr., died on Aug. 14 in Morristown Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. He was 78.

Born in Staten Island, Pearson served in the Navy during World War II. After his discharge, he attended Long Island University and graduated with a business degree. In 1952, he joined Armstrong Cork Co. as a trainee and the following year he became a salesman for Crockett & Buss, an Armstrong distributor headquartered in New York City. In 1955, he joined Congoleum as assistant district sales manager and three years later became district sales manager.

In 1961, he was named assistant sales manager of the company. An assiduous salesman, he moved steadily up the corporate ladder becoming general sales manager in 1963 and vice president in 1967. Then, in 1969, he succeeded Ned Dowd as president of the company. In 1972, after Bath Industries, a prominent ship building firm, acquired Congoleum, Pearson was given the added title of executive vice president of the parent company. Eventually, Bath divested itself of Congoleum and Pearson remained president until his retirement in 1986, concluding a 34-year stint in the industry.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Esther; a son, Rev. Dr. Harry F. Pearson, Jr., of New Town, Pa.; daughters Judy Valentine of Bernardsville, N.J., and Karen of Long Island; grandchildren Kristina Pellegrino, Lisa Lourenco, Harry F. Pearson III and Christina and Rachel Pearson, and great grandchildren Robert Valentine III, Emma and Luke Lourenco, and April Pellegrino.
