Article Park City, Utah—Irving Nussbaum was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1928, migrated to Scottsdale, Ariz., in 1961 and spent 45 years enjoying life in the region, rich with family, friends and a thriving retail floor covering operation. For the past 15 years, he maintained a summer home here, where he and his family spent quality time together, and on June 15 he passed away, three weeks before his 78th birthday.

Nussbaum and his wife, Iris, founded the Carpet Mart in Scottsdale in 1961 and built it into a major retail operation. In the early years, he was considered a pioneer, in business and in his personal life. He was a charter member of Har Zion Congregation and was a mentor to countless in business and to many relatives who relocated to the area from the East Coast. He made friends easily and often, and treasured his relationships.

In 1990, he retired from business and spent time with his family, his favorite dogs, and playing golf and tennis.

He loved playing poker with his 40-year companions.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years; sons Randy and his wife Polly, and Cal and his wife Shelli, of Scottsdale; daughter, Belle Starr of Cornville; sister Shirley Kornfeld of Lake Forest, Calif., and five grandchildren.
