Article Hakatai Enterprises Inc., an importer and distributor of glass mosaic tile, has emphasized customer service since their inception, but even Hakatai may not have been aware of the Zen-like powers that their mosaic blends radiate. Luckily for Hakatai and patrons of the new Sushi Hai Restaurant in Denver, Colorado, Satomi Yoshida-Hatz of Yoshida + Zanon Interior Design caught the vibe.

When Yoshida-Katz was designing the interior for Sushi Hai in North Denver’s trendy Highland neighborhood, her vision was to create a space filled with modern-Zen style that evoked the elements of water, earth and fire with a unique palette of colors. For the focal point of the restaurant, a 5’ x 15’ wall directly behind the star of the show , the sushi chef, Yoshida-Katz chose a sleek and soothing blend of Hakatai’s Carter ¾” x ¾” glass mosaic tile.

Using Hakatai’s online custom blend tool, which allows architects, designers and homeowners to create, price and order their own unique custom blends and gradient, Yoshida-Katz chose to create a mosaic mix of the Carter colors Pale Denim, Washed Denim and Slate Blue to represent the soothing energy of slow-flowing water.

“The glass mosaic tile blend is the focal point of the sushi bar,” said Yoshida-Katz. “I wanted to create a peaceful and soothing space, but add a level of energy for both the customers and employees. Energy is very good near water, as it will accumulate chi. The attractive colors of Hakatai’s glass tile added life to a sleek and simple space, and brought wonderful energy to the open sushi bar area.”

While Hakatai can’t promise you’ll find Zen within the palette of colors the Carter Series provides, Yoshida-Katz plans to use the website again to create another custom blend when the Sushi Hai Restaurant expands to another location in Colorado this summer.

“They are planning to open another restaurant,” Yoshida-Katz said, “and I have requested all of Hakatai’s glass tile samples. The different colors and the texture gave the sushi bar character, and the client was very pleased with the final result. Using the website was very easy, and the customer service and prices were great.”

The Carter Series is Hakatai’s best-selling collection, and one of the most versatile glass mosaic tiles around. Available in 51 colors, 24 standard blends and seven standard gradients, the design options are limitless.
