Article Ocean City, Maryland (May 8, 2006) -With the summer driving season fast approaching, the eastern shore’s leading flooring company is rolling out the red carpet for a regional highway safety campaign just in time for Ocean City’s 2006 spring and summer season. O.C. Floor Gallery will use its award winning showroom floor to launch the anti-speed campaign, “Floor It…But Not On The Highway”. The high-profile campaign is timed to coincide with the popular “ Cruisin Ocean City ” weekend (May 18-21) which precedes the official start of the summer driving season, the following Memorial Day holiday weekend.

“We want the term ‘floor it’ to mean something we do to enhance the quality of life at home, not something a speeding motorist can do to end it on the highway,” stated Scott LeClaire , President, O.C. Floor Gallery. Speed is a contributing factor in more than a third of all fatal motor vehicle crashes in Maryland , according to state transportation authorities.

O.C. Floor Gallery, designated by Mohawk Industries as a “FloorScapes” dealer, is teaming up with representatives from the flooring industry nationwide to deliver a unified message that encourages motorists to obey all posted speed limits and share the highway safely with pedestrians and others. O.C. Floor Gallery, a member of the Ocean City Chamber of Commerce and the Eastern Shore Building Industry Association, is working with members of the Hotel Motel Restaurant Association, Clear Channel Radio and Comcast Cable of Delmarva.

“We will pledge a portion of the residential flooring contracts we sign between Memorial Day and Labor Day to support this campaign and the fire and EMS (Emergency Medical Services) providers who are on the front line every day saving lives,” said the O.C. Floor Gallery’s Chris Williams . “We challenge other businesses to join us in this very worthwhile community campaign,” Williams added.

O.C. Floor Gallery is also targeting the eastern shore leg of the statewide trauma network that includes Peninsula General Regional Trauma Center and the Maryland State Police med-evac helicopter system as beneficiaries of the campaign’s efforts. Working with pre-hospital care providers on the ground, Maryland State Police flight paramedics often serve as the life-line between the eastern shore and the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore .

“We commend O.C. Floor Gallery for participating in this important highway safety partnership with the public safety community,” said Don Robertson, Mohawk Industries’ Residential Division, who participated in the kickoff of the Floor It…But Not On The Highway campaign. “The message is simple: we want to help save lives,” Robertson added.

“Floor It…But Not On The Highway” will be featured in a full-color brochure being developed with the assistance of the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Safety Office. The brochure offers important highway safety tips and driver information on vehicle laws, teen drivers, child safety seat use, pedestrian and bicycle safety. The theme will be displayed on banners, billboards and other high-profile locations throughout the Ocean City area to heighten public awareness of the need to think safety while visiting the resort.

The Ocean City Police Department has identified safety as its number one priority with promises to aggressively enforce all of the town’s traffic laws. Ocean City Police will be stepping up patrols around pedestrian crosswalks in search of not only motorists who fail to yield or stop for them, but also pedestrians who fail to use them. Police are encouraging the use of crosswalks to help avoid the tragedies that can occur when pedestrians, especially young children, dart into traffic outside designated crosswalks. Parents are being encouraged to take their children by the hand while crossing in designated crosswalks. Officers will be paying special attention to Coastal Highway , Philadelphia Avenue, Baltimore Avenue and roads leading into downtown, where pedestrian traffic is the heaviest.

Floor It…But Not On The Highway will air on special public service announcements that will promote safe and efficient travel. The public service programming will be developed jointly with Clear Channel Radio and Comcast Cable of Delmarva.
