Backlash from 'Green' movement

First off, the 'Green' movement is something long overdue. The environment has taken a beating for way too long... and sad to say we are just starting to see the detrimental effects on our physical health and planet.

However, in a rush to profit from the marketing hysteria, many companies in our industry have (too quickly) introduced 'green' products into the marketplace without enough thorough testing and research and development.

Consequently, you will start to see a rash of claims and consumer complaints never before seen in our industry that could cripple carpet mills, manufacturers of wood, laminate and ceramic tile, as well as other flooring markets.

The losses (on the low side) businesses could experience will be in the 100's of millions with the potential of being much, much more.

I hope I'm wrong, but the tremors are already being felt.

This same scenario has repeated itself many times in my Flooring Career. Rush to produce a "No Matt, No Crush" Warranty/products after Armstrong Introduced Anything Goes carpet to the hard Aluminum Oxide Scratch resistant finishes that have been oversold to Tear Resistant Vinyl Sheeting and then the 50 year wear warranties on Manufacturer Finished Hardwood.

All of the above have kept the Inspection Industry working both at inspecting and court appearances. Full Time inspectors continue to receive the benefits and see increases in income from these marketing efforts.

God Bless the Marketing Efforts of the Flooring Industry !!!

But the current GREEN carpet backing introductions and Green Yary Systems may be the biggest Boon to Inspectors Gross Income yet....

Disaster relief...

I knew someone that worked in disaster relief. He worked for a company that cleaned up debris after severe storms impacted an area. He would get special pay as well as tons of overtime during these 'grievous' times.

One day we were talking, and I asked him how things were going work-wise. Not realizing how it sounded, he said he hoped for a busy hurricane season this year because he needed the money.

My look must have jarred his senses because he caught himself, and apologized for the flippant and callous remark. I made light of the situation by telling him that it was an important job he had and that I knew he wasn't wishing harm on anybody.

I also have a friend that worked for the Red Cross and his job was to pass out Clean up kits at disater's. The part I did not like even though he was a friend was his company made the clean up kit's so he made all the way around.

Good Case in Kansas City

This past week and expected to last into next week is a good sized case on one of the "Green Backings". Grows, like your grass, with a little water...

Kansas City and you know who is representing the Company who produced the defective backing????

that's all I can say, but there will be more lawsuites blaming the installer for the dimensional dis=abilities of this backing.

Ray,

How did the case turn out here? Manufacturer defect or installer error?

Sorry Darian,

Rule #1 is to never mention names of Message Boards. Besides, there are more coming lawsuits coming.
For this past one, it was in Kansas City.
The cost of material may have only been 100,000.00 but the cost of the suit was 10x more.
