Gas, oil prices hit new records

Driving habits are going to have to change. With crude selling for $112.00 a barrel, and gasoline rising to the $4.00 per gal mark, the average family will have to start choosing between eating and driving.

Seriously, when you consider the average wage to be between 8 to 10 dollars an hour, the breakdown doesn't look good:

Family with (1) young child, both spouses working for $10.00 per hour

  • Income Per Month (40 hour week): $1,720.00x2= $3440.00gross/$2800.00net (both spouses working)
  • Rent/Mortgage $900.00
  • Utilities $175.00
  • Telephone $100.00
  • Auto Insurance (2 cars) $200.00
  • Cable TV (Basic) $50.00
  • Day Care (1 child) $679.00

Notice there are no car payments, credit card payments or health insurance premiums (they may or may not have employee benefits).

The total expenses so far is $2104.00

That leaves $696.00 for food, gas, clothes, personal items, entertainment, rental or homeowners insurance, etc.....

It is not a pretty picture.

You may get a little help by using a credit card for gas/purchases that offers a rebate; even if it's in the form of a credit off the bill or a reward.

One good card to look at is the Discover Open Road Card, 5% off gas- not much, but it's a help.

    Discipline...

They would have to be extremely disciplined in paying the balance every month. Otherwise, the hole gets deeper...

We now map out our inspection routes in an effort to save every gallon of gas we can.

I believe we can cut our driving miles if we all made the effort.

The best way to lower prices is to not make the purchase to begin with.

Just like the housing industry.. the home prices inflated faster than the buyers income... The prices are going lower to adjust to the lower demand...

    Free market works..

Sometimes I get a consumer who just will not budge on a time or day even though a slight change would make it possible to service them with no extra travel. What is the magic phrase to get co-operation? Ray, Linda?

    Magic Phrases:
    "I need your help"
    "Will you help me"
"is there anyway at all you can help me with this schedule?"
" I'm sorry, is there a way you can help me with meeting you, or someone else, at the site"?
