Baking soda is too expensive to use,,, i would think...
They just buy cheap setting materials and do not add latex... How do we tell? We send it in for testing. x

Let me understand.
The thin set being used sets up slow?
Yes, what is wrong with that?
If the setting materials have high content of gypsum, it will set up fast and that is not good.

Mr. Darrah, I was trying to ask question and seem that did not do it in the right way. I will try again please bare with me.
The retailer gives installer thin set to do a small job. The installer say that the thin set don't dry fast enough for a small job. So installer uses baking soda to dry thin set out. So Thin set dry faster so they can grout it and go.
Can this have an effected on grout color or bond on tile / stone

As a licensed tile contractor for over 24 years, the worst thing you can do is add something to thinset not reccommended by the manufacturer.
It would be far better to purchase Quick-set, which is factory blended by the manufacturer to speed-up the drying time. The problem that presents itself is most installers have never used this before and get in trouble mixing too much at one time and it sets up in the bucket or is too stiff to trowel properly after a short period of time.
Due to quick drying, buckets and tools must be rinsed with hose as soon as possible.
Generally you can set the tile and within an hour, begin grouting. Immediately after grouting, you can start moving furniture or appliances back in place (wait as long as possible).
I have used Quick-set extensively in the past and reccommend it for those small jobs that must be done in one day. Also, if you have a refridgerator, you can leave it in place the day you set the main area of the kitchen. The final day, you can Quick-set where the refridgerator is sitting by merely pulling the fridge out on dry tile. Start grouting the rest of the kitchen and when you get to the area you tiled with Quick-set, it should be dry and ready to grout as well.
*The only caution would be to wait as long as possible to roll the refridgerator back in place.

Tax Man,
My understanding is this: the slower the set, the stronger the bond..
Lifer: is that accurate?

You are right, Ray. Ideally you would want to use regular thinset with perhaps an acrylic additive to strengthen the bond on every tile job.
Note: I always used Full Flex thinset. It costs alot more, but was worth every penny.
