What are set walls?
This is the wall the installer power stretchs away from. He must first set the carpet backing into the pins of the tack strip or the carpet will simply pull away from the wall upon power stretching. THis leaves pin holes in the backing.
They, upon power stretching, the backing of the set wall is pulled into the pins, again leaving pin holes and some elongation and secondary backing yarn distortion.
Stephen tries to convince inspectors that there should be nothing on the backing on the set walls, not even pin holes or yarn distortion.
Heck, when power stretched properly the set wall makes noise from the backing being pulled into the pins... like a tearing sound.... I would think this stress would leave something on the secondary backing...

I think a misunderstanding which can happen in the "heat" of internet forum "du=cusens", has happen,,,,I think Stephen is pointing out that many inspectors can't figure out which one is the set wall, and which one is not the set wall, which one is the stretch wall and which one is not,, do they check the entire length for the stretching marks or only a corner.... do they look at strip/pad requirements, distance from walls, does the wall base reach the floor or now,,,condition of the gully, we all must remember, the Obessessed One is only taking a nap,,,,he can wake up at anytime,

I don't think Stephen knows about this. He's a hard surface guy, is what he keeps telling us.
But if there are no pin holes,,,,, there is a problem.

Did I say nothing? Of course there will be pin holes but maybe not elongated ones like the stretch wall would. Depends on the backing and the length or width of the room.
How many installers have you sent to the poor house with your trick inspections?

Let me ask the question, what are the standards for Softbac installation? Are they the same as action back? Are there any differences? What standards do you reference, Ray?

I think people get all hung up on looking for the stretch marks into the backing, you need to need to know more then just that. 1- what is the size of the pins in the tack strip? 2-what is the pick count of the carpet? 3- How much latex is in the backing? 4-belive it or not but even the pad can make the pin holes look diffrent,if the pad is higher then the strip it brings the carpet in at a diffrent angle then pad that is at the same level giving diffrent pin marks.

one big indicator is the carpet itself,,,what you see and feel as you release it from the strips,,,,think about it a minute,
did you have to "lift up" and pull it off, did it just come off? is it "rolled up" at the walls off the strips, distance from walls of strip of course, but, does the wall base reach the subfloor ? if not, do we have a "proper gully", and more and more and more,,,that is the problem with just looking for one thing, agree with last post, and something only an "installer" from experience and knowledge firsthand will know, slt
