| 12/21/2008 5:09:51 PM Why Does A Carpet Ugly Out?
It has been said that carpet does not wear out but ugly out. What causes this and how should it be addressed or handled?

The politically correct answer is that carpet ugliy's out due to improper cushion selection, inappropriate maintenance or consumer neglect along with premature blossoming of the fiber.

If that is not true why is it that the same carpet coming off the same roll installed with in days of each other ugly's out at a diffrent rate?

Roland, is it in the same exact traffic pattern? Perhaps it didn't get enough stain treatment.

That is the main reason CARE. It is with anything, your car your house what you wear if they are not taken care of they will ugly out. Not saying that now and then you can not get a lemon but you do need to take care of what you have.

care, simple, Roland is right in my opinion, care of the product.... car is a good example, I was told years ago I would not get over 100,000 miles on my Windstar, I got almost 400,000 when I sold it, and it is still in use! I sold it because it "ugly out", and people were beginning to say things about it as I drove up to inspections, same with an Ion I had, at 160,000 I sold it, I took care of it but with both, I had no control of what people did, like run into them, scratch them, bump them, kick them when mad,,,same with carpet, care will prolong the life but care must be taken, same carpet in five houses, four taken care of, will look good forever, one not, cra0p looking,,,
now, definde "premature blooming" please? and what causes it?

If you are saying it's "premature" blooming that sounds like there is a 'set' time for it to bloom. So what is the time requirement, or standard to judge it against?
Does it have one or is that a nice way of saying wear?

"Premature" simply means before its time. Lets face it here, not all twists stay tight forever.
What is the allowed rate for blossoming? I don't know myself. But do I care about crapet anymore? Heck, I don't even like wasting the time I am right this second talking about carpet anyhoo.

heat set issue? Premature blooming says nothing if you think of it....what is premature?
heat set issue can be judged by what?:::::::::: abrasive foot traffic? is that related to texture retention?
whatever happen to appearance retention and why?

I want to make this more public than it already is. Most inspectors think delam and buckling is mostly installer related.
