MANNINGTON WORKS WITH GARY SINISE FOUNDATION TO AID VETERAN
When serving around the world to protect the freedoms we all enjoy, members of our military make many sacrifices. When returning home, they have earned both our thanks and a helping hand, too. That’s why Mannington recently partnered with the National Wood Flooring Association to support the Gary Sinise Foundation’s R.I.S.E. program which builds specially adapted smart homes for severely wounded veterans.

For the Duluth, Georgia, home of U.S. Army Master Sergeant Cedric King (Ret.) and his family, Mannington donated hardwood flooring. King, who was severely wounded by an IED while deployed in Afghanistan in 2012, lost both legs and sustained disfigurement to his right hand, now uses prosthetics and a wheelchair. So a specially adapted smart home was built to give him back some of the independence he lost on the battlefield.

For the King home, Mannington’s Andean Pecan hardwood floors (in “Tobacco” color) proved the perfect fit. Aesthetically, this exotic hardwood fills the foyer, living room, dining room, kitchen and breakfast room with warmth and character with planks infused with rich color contrast, unique texture and intricate graining.

And Mannington engineered hardwood floors are far stronger than a single piece of solid wood and more structurally sound—they won’t buckle, gap, cup or twist. This creates a smooth, durable surface for Master Sergeant King to navigate whether walking or in his wheelchair.

“Over the course of Mannington’s 100 years in business, many of our associates and their family members have served in the military. This includes my father, Johnny Campbell, a World War II Marine veteran, and my mother who was with the WAVES,” says Keith Campbell, Mannington Mills Chairman of the Board. “We know, first-hand, the sacrifices that veterans and their families make. When the NWFA approached us with the opportunity to provide flooring for Master Sergeant King’s home, we were honored to have been asked.”

“A lot goes into the building of these specially adapted smart homes and we are tremendously grateful to our generous in-kind donors who lend their support to the Gary Sinise Foundation’s R.I.S.E. program.” says Judith Otter, Executive Director of the Gary Sinise Foundation.

With his Academy Award-nominated portrayal of Lt. Dan Taylor in the landmark film, Forrest Gump, Gary Sinise formed an enduring connection with servicemen and women throughout the military community. In 2011, he launched the Gary Sinise Foundation to honor our nation’s defenders, veterans, first responders, their families and those in need by creating and supporting unique programs designed to entertain, educate, inspire, strengthen and build communities. An advocate of America’s service members for nearly 40 years. Sinise has received many awards, including the Presidents Citizens Medal—the second-highest civilian honor awarded to citizens for exemplary deeds performed in service of our nation.

We salute the work of the Gary Sinise Foundation and are pleased to have been selected to help with the home of Master Sergeant King.
